Week Beginning 5.9.22

Week 1 and we’re off to a great start!

Morpurgo class settled nicely into our morning routine of maths morning work (is there anything better than the first piece of work in a brand new exercise book?). This will usually include the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), revisiting key learning and reasoning questions. It’s also a nice calm start in the mornings!

We spent some time sharing what we got up to during the summer holidays. They seem to like the new neutral theme of the classroom. Everyone seemed happy, calm and ready to take on a new academic year!

In maths we started our topic on place value. We read large numbers, partitioned them, drew them, built them with manipulatives, placed them on number lines and wrote them in words. The children came up with lots of reasons why we need to be able to read and understand large numbers up to a million in real life.

In English we stated our new book “The Wolves in the Walls”. The children began with a cold write to show me what they already know. They read their work with such pride and with lovely expression! We made predictions and acted these out as characters from the book.

In Geography we used atlases to locate Mexico and the UK (this links to our topic Hola Mexico!). The children coloured and labelled a map of the world with the oceans and continents.

In RE we discussed important journeys we’ve been on and how these are different to a pilgrimage. In PSHE the children discussed their goals and how they will achieve them.

In Art the children looked at the work of Frida Kahlo and created a double-page spread on her life and artwork.

In Science we started an exciting new topic on forces! The children watched and discussed a video about life in a low-gravity environment. We used forcemeters and recorded this information on a table.

In music we listened to Living on a Prayer and the children loved this high energy rock classic! They correctly identified the instruments used and used musical terminology to give their opinions.

In computing we created an algorithm for functioning traffic lights!

Week one is complete and there’s so much to look forward to in Year 5!

Morpurgo class had a mature discussion about Queen Elizabeth II and the enormous impact she had on the world. We were all sad to hear of her passing.

Stay safe,

Mr Donnellan
