Shenley's Got Talent!

As part of our Religious Education at Shenley Primary School, Shakespeare and Morpurgo class visited the Life Expo Exhibition on Tuesday at Holy Trinity Church, Frogmore, St. Albans. This immersive experience was an exciting multi-media exhibition, which compliments the National Curriculum teaching of Christianity in an authentic and attractive manner. The children were invited to think deeply, placing enquiry questions at the heart of learning.

Thank you to the 'Christian Input for Primary Schools' in St. Albans and district who sponsored our visits.

The staff at the exhibition praised the children for their interest, thoughtful questions, and behaviour, commenting they were a credit to the school.

Watford FC Premier League Primary Stars came to deliver an

Elimination of Racial Discrimination workshop

with Rowling class. It was lovely to see Miss Burton again and engage with this fantastic arty workshop, painting with different skin tones.

Science Fair

The whole school loved the learning in Science week. We celebrated this with our Science Fair and the children and parents enjoyed all the varied investigations on display, well done everyone who participated!

Rabbi Garber came for his last assembly with us to celebrate Pesach. He told us the story of the Passover and how the Jewish people escaped from Egypt. He showed us the Seder plate, flat bread and wine cups that Jewish people use to celebrate Pesach. We would like to thank Rabbi Garber for all the brilliant assemblies he has shared with Shenley Primary school over the years and wish him well in his new job.

Art club have started back with creating abstract backgrounds ready for art work on top. They used anything other than brushes to paint- cardboard pieces, hands and fingers were the favourite!

In Forest School the children have been having fun using the Christmas trees.

We have started Book Buddies again which the children love, it's so wonderful to see the older children inspiring the younger children to read and vice versa.

In Dreams and Goals, we have been thinking about how we would feel if we didn't achieve our goals and what advice we would give to others.

In EYFS we have been learning about winter.

Year 6 Bake off this week had a distinctly Christmassy theme! Delicious!!

On Sunday the children went to the Christingle service to celebrate Jesus,

the Light of the World!

Tuesday 6th December the whole school enjoyed a visit from Living Things. The children learned all about a frog, a tortoise, a millipede, a meerkat, a corn snake, a bearded dragon lizard, a sugar glider and a tarantula. The children touched the animals and the millipede curled itself round an arm, the meerkat popped its head up when it sat on our backs and the sugar glider jumped from our backs when we stood on a PE table pretending to be a tree!

It was such a lovely experience!

Thank you to the parents who kindly donated this!

On Tuesday afternoon Councillor Nicky Beaton came to school to plant two trees for the Queen's Green Canopy! The children in Forest School helped to put a stake and a guard around the trees to protect them from wildlife (and footballs!)

Thank you Nicky for supporting us on this special occasion when we remember not only the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, but also her whole life.

Dogs Trust

We have been so lucky to have a visit from the Dogs Trust this week. They did a school assembly and carried out a range of workshops for the children. The children learnt about how to keep dogs safe, how to treat dogs and make links in Science, learning about their senses. Some of the classes have created posters and written about Dog safety too!

The Great Fire of London

Year 2 have been learning about the Great Fire of London. This week they built their Tudor houses and painted them. We also set up a safe 'fire' to show the children what it would have been like as the fire spread so quickly back in 1666.

Year 6

In Year 6 during their Science lessons, the children have been investigating the the rate of mould growth in different environments. They have been making scientific predictions and are looking forward to analysing and writing up their results!

Year 1 finished their 'running' topic in PE this week. They have been engaging in lots of running games and skills to improve their techniques.  They explored running using different body parts and different techniques and began to understand how to run efficiently.

Nursery went to the music room this week as part of their Phonics lessons. They have been learning the names of different musical instruments and played listening games where they tried to identify the instrument that is playing. They also had a go at playing lots of different instruments and practiced starting and stopping to a signal. Well done Nursery!

Great Big Green Week

This week we are celebrating the Great Big Green Week and we visited Shenley Park on Tuesday 27th. Thank you to Liz who invited the whole school for this apple juicing experience. We tasted different varieties of apples and compared the flavours. We chopped, mashed and pressed the apples to make delicious apple juice! Thank you also to the staff and parent helpers who made the day such a great success.

Goodbye and thank you

I’m sure that you would like to join me in saying Goodbye and thank you to Mrs Gellman who has worked at Shenley Primary school for 18 years. The majority of our children have worked with Mrs Gellman in Nursery over their time here and benefited from her wealth of experience and great patience. Mrs Gellman will be sadly missed and we wish her well in her change of career. What fantastic memories we have of her time at Shenley, thank you!

Today the Nursery class had a party to say goodbye to Mrs Gellman. Mrs Gellman has been a central part of the Early Years team for the best part of 18 years and has taught many of the children throughout the school. She will be really missed by everyone, but we wish her the best of luck as she moves on to her next adventure.

Rabbi Garber came into assembly to teach us about Rosh Hashanah, we learned the rhythm for the shofar, it made an impressive sound!

We found out that Jewish families eat apples and honey to celebrate their new year, we hope your new school year is sweet and our words are as sweet as apples and honey!

After a lovely visit from Rabbi Garber on Thursday and learning about Jewish New Year - Rosh Hashanah, the Nursery children were really keen to learn more about how Jewish people will be celebrating this weekend. We decided to taste the traditional new years treat of apples and honey, a sweet treat, for a sweet year ahead. "Shanah Tovah!" to everyone in our school community celebrating.

Morpurgo class have been learning the names of different fruits in French an apple is a pomme.

Next week is The Great Big Green Week and we are very excited to be visiting Shenley Park for apple juicing.

Autumn is here and we are watching the leaves change colour, playing with conkers and observing the differences in the seasons. Please make sure you have a coat, in case it rains and wear sensible school shoes.

Please ensure that children bring the correct PE kit to school: a white school T-shirt, blue school shorts, indoor plimsolls, a pair of trainers and royal or navy blue tracksuit for outdoor PE. PE kit is part of our school uniform.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new children and families this term, welcome to Shenley Primary School! We put the children first in all that we do and we hope that you enjoy your time here with us, if you have any questions please ask, we are here to help.

We shared in this time of mourning for the Queen in assembly today by watching the video of Queen Elizabeth with Paddington bear to celebrate her Platinum jubilee. The children watched the 2022 trooping of the colour, replete with a fly past from the Red Arrows. We have happy memories of our Platinum jubilee celebrations with a street party on the playground and now we remember the Queen. We prayed for the Royal family and the nation to be comforted in their loss. St Martin's church is open for families to visit and there is a book of remembrance for us to write in.

Patch has been retired to the countryside to live with other rabbits. We would like to thank Keira-May and her family for looking after Patch during the Summer holidays. Mrs Henman has promised us a photo of him tbc...

We would like to thank the Kikaya family for paying for the Design Den to be decorated over the Summer holidays. It will be so exciting to start to use this room, thank you also to Mrs Jacobs who has been very busy preparing the room and choosing inspiring objects for Art and Design. We will soon be posting pictures of our Art work...

We would like to thank Gristwood and Toms for their kind donation which paid for the EYFS fence to be made secure, the classrooms to be decorated and the brand new sandpit. We very much appreciate the financial support, alongside the practical support, in removing the Wildwood Den.

Thank you also to the EYFS staff for moving all the furniture, building the sandpit, sourcing new resources and redesigning the EYFS classrooms. The children love their new classrooms!

We are collecting food for Harvest to support people facing hardship. Please bring food donations to school and we will arrange for them to go to the Borehamwood food bank after our Harvest celebrations on October 5th.

Today there wasn't a dry the in the house for the Leaver's assembly. The children sang beautifully and shared their favourite memories from their time at Shenley. We have been busy signing t-shirts and autograph books all day! We wish them all well as they move on... we will miss you!!

The Y5/6 production 'Treachery at Traitor's Quay' was a highlight of the year, what amazing performances they gave the children and the parents! Speaking out, singing, dancing, solos and great team work came together to show what life was like for evacuees during the Second World War. At times there was hardly a dry eye in the place! Well done Shakespeare and Morpurgo class and well done to all the staff who worked so hard to make this production so lovely!

Shakespeare class had an amazing prom! They looked so grown up and ready for Secondary school!

At SHENFEST we celebrated and remembered the life of Clare Cocomazzi!

A huge thank you to the PTA who did a fantastic job and worked SO hard to make the day such a great success!

The PTA raised £1,169!!

Thank you to everyone who supported the day.

We are very proud to announce that Shenley Primary School has been awarded the Gold School Games Mark!! This was awarded for our commitment and engagement in

School Games for 2021-22.

We are sorry to announce that Claire Dales our Sports leader is leaving us this term after serving in Shenley Primary for 10 years, she will be greatly missed and we all wish her well in her new post. We are now happy to announce that Nicola Burton will replace Claire as Sports leader and we are sure that our commitment to School Games will remain consistently excellent.

Milligan class had a fantastic 'wow' day learning about Ancient Egypt, they had such fun, they even got to Mummify Mr Donnellan!!

The children enjoyed meeting their new teachers on Transition Day and the parents met them in the evening to introduce the whole family.

I would like to thank all the parents and carers for their support this year and I hope that you all have a restful summer break. We look forward to greeting the children in their new classes on Friday 2nd September.

This week is National Sports Week,

and what a week it has been!!

Everyone got a turn to play on the new cool playground equipment

at the front of the school!

We cycled on the smoothie bikes to make delicious smoothies!

Celebrating healthy eating.

We did boxing, tennis, skipping, Gaelic football, First Aid, Cooking, football and archery... in fact we've been so excited all week and getting loads of exercise!!

Then, on Thursday it was Sports Day, the weather threw at least

3 seasons at us, but we were undeterred!!

We sprinted, we jumped on space hoppers, we jumped in sacks, we skipped and we even tried a new version of the egg and spoon race, the potato and spoon race - equally funny!

Our parents cheered us on and kept in good spirits despite the rain...

We shared our picnic on the field with our parents and carers and the sun shone!

Then we went to the Harris Lane field, which was set up as our

Cancer Research fun run.

Again, just after we started it poured with rain, quickly followed by

lovely sunshine!

The parents and carers ran with the children, making this a very special occasion. So far we have raised £109, if you still need to contribute towards Cancer Research please donate on Arbor, or by cash at the school office - thank you!

Sports Day results:

Green team 5020

Yellow team 5000

Red team 4580

Blue team 3450

Congratulations Green team!

We would like to congratulate all the children for their sports this week, their support of one another, encouraging and helping one another -

it's so lovely to see that 'sports person-like' behaviour!

A special thanks to Claire Dales and Lora Grant for organising the week.

Thanks to the PTA for providing refreshments throughout the day.

Thank you to all the staff who have worked so hard and to all the parents and carers for supporting us on Sports Day!

The next parent coffee afternoon is on Friday 1st July at 2.30pm.

We will be discussing the school vision and values.

We will also review the updated Relationships and Sex Education policy.

Please join us, all welcome!

Celtic Harmony!

Hot off the press!!

Here are some of the KS2 children having a fantastic time at Celtic Harmony for their residential trip. What lovely weather for such a lovely occasion!

Check out the Learning tab for photos of the children at Celtic Harmony today and tomorrow.

We loved the Kipling class assembly on Thursday, they re-enacted the story of the Three Little Pigs replete with songs and actions, such fun!

We also loved the Ahlberg class assembly today! We learned all about saving the planet - turning off the taps, recycling our litter and turning off the lights. What lovely singing and musical instruments!

Three boys worked collaboratively to make a model and they could describe it in intricate detail, fantastic design and fantastic team work!!

We are busy practising for Sports Day on Thursday 23rd June, please come and join us!

We will be raising money for Cancer Research at our afternoon Fun Run on the Harris Lane Field on Thursday 23rd June. Cancer Research is a charity which is close to our hearts, as cancer has affected several members of staff and families recently.  Please let us know if you can help to supervise the Harris Lane Field area during the races.

Please feel free to run with your children and raise money together for such a worthy cause.

We are pleased to be launching our Book Bingo today! The initiative encourages children to read,  understand and enjoy a variety of authors and types of books throughout the year.

They can start anywhere they like. When they show their completed work to their teacher, this box will be crossed off on their card. Children are encouraged to share a book review, share their book with a friend or talk to a teacher about the book they have read. You must only complete one square at a time and only use a book once per bingo card.

Every time a row is completed; children will be rewarded with a certificate and special mention in our weekly Celebration Assembly and their name entered into our prize draw for the end of term.

Please continue to sign children's diaries when you have read with them, as our expectation remains that all children will read at least 4 times a week with an adult. This is a huge support to developing their reading fluency and confidence.

This week in Nursery we have been using the sounds we have learnt so far to read and write simple words. We have practiced sounding out words together and writing them down. Some children were even able to sound out and write down the words independently.

Rowling class are playing call my bluff, a great way to learn new technical vocabulary in English. The children take turns at playing teacher learning negative numbers through counting up and down which is great fun!

DEAR Drop Everything And Read in Year 5.

Isobel and Oscar were winners at the Jubilee picnic on the Harris Lane field, congratulations!!

We have been learning about caring for the environment. We have been thinking about making sure we put rubbish on the bin-we went outside and collected some rubbish and then put it in the bin. We have also written posters for our classroom to remind us to put rubbish in the bin.

We have been celebrating the Queen's platinum jubilee with a special picnic lunch and a parade. Thank you to all the parents, staff, governors and particularly the kitchen staff for all their hard work in making this such a great success!

The children paraded from the Hall and around the playground to Rule Britannia and the teachers made an arch!

We ate coronation chicken, cucumber sandwiches, cherry shortbread and jewelled ice lollies!! The kitchen staff gave prizes for their colouring competition and the rain just held off!!

Y4 went to St Alban's cathedral and had the most wonderful trip, a step back into history to learn all about the story of St Alban, to make stained glass windows and have a great time.

Ahlberg class have been working hard on their maths to learn number bonds to 10. The children have been playing a game called 'make 10' using a tens frame, cubes and a dice to see who can be the first to complete the tens frame. You could have a go at playing this game at home.

Nursery filled up their Marble Jar last week and had chosen to bring their bike or scooter to school. We went on the back playground with them for the morning. All the children were so kind to each other, sharing their bikes and scooters and taking turns on each other's.

Starting the second half with an amazing comeback, we managed to even the score out to 4-4! The three goals were scored by number 7 Louis. With the other team scoring another 2 goals really put us down but we carried on fighting and got another amazing goal from number 7. The final score was 6-5 to St Theresa's, everyone played really well and we can't wait to get back on the pitch!"

Thank you to the cooks for a lovely pancake day celebration! Yummy...

February 25th 2022

It has been lovely to get to know some parents and carers at the 'Meet and Greet' coffee mornings last half term. The next 'Meet and Greet' is Friday 4th March at 2.30pm, it would be great to talk to you then. I have collated the answers to my questions on word clouds, these can be added to after future meetings. I have also designed a parent/carer feedback form, to gather responses from those of you who are not available to come into school, which you will receive via the School Gateway. Please respond by Friday 18th March 2022, thank you!

The first question is: What do you like about Shenley Primary school?

The second question is: What do you want our Y6 children to be like when they leave Shenley?

The third question is: How can we improve at Shenley Primary school?

The last question is: What skills do you have to offer the school?

On Monday, as it was so windy, the children could not go in the woodland as it was dangerous. Instead, we stayed on the field and the playground for Forest school. The children practised their knots and made wind streamers, played with the giant scarves and the highlight was flying the kite. Their faces say it all!!

It was so lovely and really special to have so many family members in school after being apart for so long. Morpurgo class were the first to have their Stay and Learn, where family members were invited into school to join in with their children and take part in a lesson. Year 5 explored Art and landscapes, in predation for their Art sequence of learning which will focus on David Hockney and his use of colour and perspective in his art work, particularly in landscapes.

Stay and learn with year 3 was a lovely occasion, it was so good to see so many parents. Everyone had a great time making a snapping crocodile in DT.

Snap! Snap! Snap!

The after school club enjoyed making the pizzas they made for their snack. Then they had a lovely time using the gym equipment in the hall.

We are very proud of the Y4 rap!!

A fun way to present a serious message:

Stop Bullying!

This week Milligan Class have created some creatures in art! They used a combination of collage and painting techniques and had lots of fun producing some very exciting work!

Rowling class practised their skills on the outdoor apparatus and showed good core strength.

Milligan class were very excited for the new STAR of the day incentive. They have all been showing good learning, respect, kindness and determination to try become the STAR of the day, it's been so hard to choose! Well done to the children this week that have been our STARs of the day!

The whole class would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Darren Bloom at EDB Graphics for his very generous donation of the fantastic STAR of the day frame, it's been a real highlight for us this week!

Kipling class enjoyed dressing up as a number on Number Day!

Rowling class are so enjoying this book...

Shakespeare class worked hard at Forest School this week planting a hedge to ensure our safety at the front of the school. Please don't trample our new plants, they need time to grow into a full hedge - thank you! This is also good as a habitat for wildlife, we need more hedgerow in the environment.

Jeffers class had a great time at Forest School this week, what a variety of activities they chose, well done!

There was a new teacher in Reception this week when Orion taught the rest of his class how to make Chinese dragons as they have been learning about Chinese New Year.

This week Nursery have been learning about Chinese New Year. We found out about how the animals had a race to decide who the next year would be named after. We also learnt about how Chinese people celebrate the coming of the new year. Some of the children had a go at copying the names of the animals who entered the race.

Year 6s have had a fun time creating the moon phases using Oreos, how yummy!

This is Year 4 at Forest School this week. They worked as a team to build bridges over a 'river' and then had a leapfrog competition across the field.

At the end of last week, Year 1 took a trip to St Martin's Church to support their RE learning! They had a great time and learnt a lot.

We have decided to change our MFL (modern foreign language) to French, Y3 have started already!! "Bonjour!"

In DT Year 5 were exploring basic bread recipe ingredients and then ways to alter the bread.

They all produced unique mini loaves, some were flavoured and some were shaped. They smelled delicious!

In ART club the children finished their Albert Irvin inspired pieces using print techniques to fill the rectangular spaces they had created.

The children have had a great 'Number Day' engaging in lots of rich maths activities, fun learning, games and much more! Thank you for all the great outfits today!

We are excited that next Friday (4th February) is 'Number Day' which is in association with the NSPCC. On this day, all children and staff in the school are being asked to 'Dress as a Digit' which means to wear an item of clothing with a number on or dress as a number in some way. We will also be taking part in fun Maths activities throughout the day.

Star of the day!

A child from each class is chosen as “Star of the day” and they enjoy being a “Star!” Please encourage your child to share with you the reason they were chosen and praise them for this.

Year 6 have begun our new art topic of Illusions. We started by researching some illusion artists who use a range of techniques to create their illusions.

We are very proud of the Art club, this week the children have looked at the work of Albert Irvin. We are using his art work to create a piece. We have prepared the background using two primary colours and exploring mixing different tones.

Last week we looked at Paul Klee's art work and created some abstract pieces first closing our eyes and taking our pencil across the page without lifting it off. We then tried to create a face using the technique of fluid movements without taking our pencil off the page. To finish the children used crayons and watercolour.

Paul Klee said, " A line is a dot which went for a walk".

Where will your dot take you?

Here are some pictures of Milligan class deciding whether animals are carnivores, herbivores or omnivores in Science.

Year 3 have been working hard in maths all week, a lot of them have been very proud to bring in learning they've done outside the classroom without being asked. Real dedication to learning in Milligan this week 👏

Ahlberg class have been reading the story of The Gruffalo's Child and the children have been making homes for the creatures in the story.

Y3 dance

Here is the KS2 work about "Coming to England." These displays are a real feature highlighting our reading with a multi-cultural emphasis. Having this super work up in the shared area shows how we value diversity at Shenley Primary School.

Here is Rowling class, showing off our class 'star of the day' chair. Miss Atkinson spray painted it gold and added a gold chiffon bow! The children love it and work so hard to earn it for the day.

At Forest School this week Nursery and Reception made bird feeders/seed balls using bird seed, lard, and oats. Charlotte: "The birds can't get the worms because the ground is too hard." We have hung the bird feeders all around the outside classroom and Forest School area to help keep our local birds fed this winter.

Jeffers Class took a trip to Australia as part of our Geography topic comparing the UK to Australia! We packed our suitcases for the trip and listened to the National Anthem on arrival.

It was great fun and we can’t wait to learn more!

EYFS

This week we have been learning about Winter. The children have been trying to melt the ice outside, so we decided to find out what would make some ice cubes melt the quickest. We put some ice cubes on the window sill in the sun, we put some ice cubes with water, some ice cubes with salt and some ice cubes we tried to melt in our hands and breathe on. We thought that the ice cubes on the window sill would melt first, but we were excited to find out that the ice cubes that we held in our hands and breathed on melted the quickest The next ice cubes to melt were those in water, then the ones with salt and the ice cubes on the window sill were the last.

Exciting Inclusion news... in Milligan class there is a robot!!

One of our classmates is unwell and is accessing their lessons through a telepresence robot called AV1.  AV1 sits in the classroom in place of the child, and the child can then join in lessons by listening, watching the teacher, asking questions, and participating in discussions. The children have found this so exciting!!

Nursery have been learning about 2D shapes.

Can you guess the shape?

Patch has moved!!

Y3 have been dramatic this week, look at the energy in their movements. They have been using manipulatives to demonstrate division in maths. Well done Milligan class!

EYFS have been sampling tropical food from Trinidad that was mentioned in "Coming to England" mango, pineapple, jack fruit and sweet potato - they were delicious!!

EYFS got messy doing their finger printing like the artist Alma Thomas!!

Y5 are reading Firebird in Guided Reading which is really exciting, they have started a new Geography focus on rivers and created some art work.

Friday 7th January 2022

Welcome back from the Christmas break and I would like to wish all the staff, children, and parents a Happy New Year. I am really looking forward to working with you and I am excited about joining Shenley Primary School! We have been happy to welcome Mr Donnellan as the new Milligan class teacher.

We have had a busy three days; we have been reading the Floella Benjamin book “Coming to England.” Cooke class have read the book and loved the beautiful pictures of Trinidad.

Ahlberg class showed me their fantastic writing and what they had chosen to pack in their suitcases for the two extremes of weather in either Trinidad or icy England. Some children made a boat to carry them from Trinidad to England.

Well done to Kipling class who have been exploring the emotions of Floella. How would you feel if you moved to another country? Would those feelings change over time?

They have looked at the artist Diane Ewen.

 What beautiful work, well done!

We are very proud of the posters in Jeffers class, they are preparing to write a letter using expanded noun phrases. They have enjoyed the artwork of Sir Frank Bowling who experiments with different textures using glitter.

Milligan class have written a story map for “Coming to England” and they have learned the story with fun actions.

They are studying the black artist Jean-Michel Basquiat who uses graffiti and a hip-hop style.

Rowling class have looked at the work of a black female artist, Claudette Johnson who paints with umber –

mud, mud, glorious mud!

They have also considered Malorie Blackman, a black author. They have compared the difference between a biography and an autobiography.

Morpurgo class have been making predictions and taking careful notes about Floella Benjamin.

They have also studied the techniques of Chris Olifi who is a black British artist.

Shakespeare class have been looking the artist Kara Walker, their stunning silhouettes will be the background for their final piece of work.

We look forward to finding out how the children develop their ideas about “Coming to England” next week. Watch this space…

We made it to the Christmas break and what a half term it has been! Firstly, I would like to say a huge well done and thank you to all of our Shenley pupils who make us all so proud!

We have had a very busy half term, with a slightly earlier end but with many learning achievements and memories. This week has been no different with four wonderful Christmas performances that took place for our Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children. We had “We Are Going On a Baby Hunt” and “Lights, Camel, Action”. Thank you parents and carers for coming and following COVID and school guidelines to help the children share their wonderful acting, singing and dancing!

Tree planting

This week, Milligan and Morpurgo class have also been down to the local allotments to plant more trees as part of the Queen’s Jubilee. They had so much fun! Well done for being so sensible on your walk. We look forward to watching the trees grow! Thank you to Mrs Jacobs and Mrs Irvin for making it happen. We also want to thank all our parent volunteers who supported us!

Christmas Lunch

Christmas Lunch and Christmas Jumper Day went swimmingly on Wednesday. We must firstly say thank the PTA for the crackers that they provided. The children came in different sittings, enjoyed a hall full of Christmas songs and lots of fun while they ate.

We must of course say a huge thank you to Ange, Melanie and Kelly who provided a scrumptious Christmas lunch for all our children and staff! We are very grateful.

Year 6

We are very proud of Shakespeare class this week. The children went down to to Wilton House with Miss Suckling and Mrs Dales to give the residents some calendars

that they had made for them. They also stood outside and sung some carols for them. How lovely!

Before we see you off into the New Year, I would like to say a hige thank you to Miss Cornwell. As you know Miss Cornwell is leaving us and moving on to new adventures. We have been so lucky to have her teach so many of our children, I know she has meant so much to them. 'Good Luck' Miss Cornwell.

2022 welcomes Mr Donnellan our new Milligan class teacher. We also welcome Mrs Amos, our new Headteacher. Both are very much looking forward to seeing you all in the New Year.

On behalf of the staff and I, we would like to wish you a very happy and safe Christmas. We look forward to seeing you all back on the 5th of January.

We have had a lovely week this week. We are getting very excited about Christmas and have been busy rehearsing for our productions/carol concerts that are coming up soon!

The PTA are busy planning ideas for our 'Frost Fair' that we are combining with our Carol Concert for Year 3,4,5 and 6 children on Monday 20th December. This is open for everyone to attend (on the front playground); we are very much looking forward to hearing the songs and readings from our Key Stage Two children!

Jeffers Class

In Year 2 this week, the children have been looking at poetry. The video below shows the class performing “At the Zoo” by William Makepeace Thackeray. They created the actions themselves. After this performance, the children worked with their partners to write their own versions.

Friday 26th November 2021

This week, although a shorter one than normal, has been jam-packed with exciting learning opportunities for our children. On Wednesday, we had ‘No Pens Day Wednesday’ which meant classes were given different opportunities to learn – with no pens! This placed a huge emphasis on 'speaking and listening' skills in a more explicit way and enabled our children to record there learning differently.

Bulb planting

On Wednesday, Mrs Irvin and Miss Atkinson took Year 4 down to the Spinney to plant some bulbs that were donated to us. They had a wonderful time enjoying the outdoors and developing their planting skills. Over the coming weeks, more of our classes, including our eco-warriors, are going to be planting trees and bulbs around Shenley!

Well done Jess!

We are so proud of Jessica in Morpurgo class who has completed a sponsored walk of 22km/13.7miles in 6 hours! She has done so well and has raised over £1700 so far for a charity, who not only supported her Grandma, but also supports young people with dementia. The charity itself are very grateful and proud of her achievement as her sponsorship will provide them with a lot of support.

Well done Jess - you are an inspiration!

Donation

We are extremely thankful to one of our parents and the company they work for, St. James’s Place, who donated £300 to the school. We used this money to enhance our music curriculum and have purchased some glockenspiels. Year 6 were the first to have a go and have enjoyed their music lessons this week. Thank you St James’s Place!

Forest School

We always love sharing our Forest School learning opportunities with you. This week, Nursery and Reception have thoroughly enjoyed their time outside.

Triangle of Reflection

We have been supporting our children to assess their learning each lesson. You might have heard them talking about the ‘Triangle of Reflection'. Each lesson we support our children to articulate how they have met the skills of the lesson and use a triangle to represent this! Please talk to your children at home - we want you to hear all about the 'Triangle of Reflection'.

I would like to say how proud I am of all the children at Shenley. Not just this week, but each week it is a pleasure being able to reflect on such wonderful learning.

I hope you have a lovely long weekend,

Friday 19th November 2021

It has been a busy week at Shenley this week! It has been lovely to see you all enjoying the Book Fair, and even better finishing off the week with our Children in Need celebrations. We were so impressed with all the spots around school today! Thank you for all your donations - remember you can still donate on the School Gateway app if you have not done so already.

We have thoroughly enjoyed the cleverly decorated biscuits that flew through the classroom doors this morning. Check out some of the great designs!

NSPCC Art competition

We would like to say HUGE congratulations to two of our pupils in Morpurgo class who entered the NSPCC art competition for local schools and won. This had a ‘Save the Planet’ theme and both Amelia and Stanley received a WH Smith voucher for their efforts. Well done – some amazing art. Through efforts of all the schools, £2800 was raised for the NSPCC.

Art and DT studio

We are very excited to announce that we are turning one of our spare classrooms into an ‘Art and DT’ studio. With having the extra space, our aim has always been to utilise this and make sure we have the best provision for our children. The aim is have a classroom that teachers can go to teach Art or DT lessons, this will be a fully stocked ‘studio’ style space.

In revamping our classroom space, we also need your help! If you have anything, you feel you could donate, or know anyone that has any Art/DT materials, please do get in touch! We are also looking for a DT workbench. One of the things that I have been keen to do is open the school and invite parents in to paint! Please do contact me, or find me on the gate if this is something you would be interested in doing to support us.

Crochet and Knitting club!

Are you interested in crochet or knitting? Do you want to learn, or have some time to crochet and knit yourself?

On a Monday lunchtime, Mrs Scanzi and Miss Gallagher are running a club for our children. They are going to start with our Year 6 as a trial run. If you have a crochet hook/knitting needles and some wool, bring them along on Monday! Don't worry we have lots of spares too.

Thank you and have a lovely weekend!
