Week Beginning 20.2.23

Week 7 and Morpurgo class deepen their mathematical understanding through manipulatives!

In English year 5 are nearing the end of Boy in the Tower, but there’s still a lot of mysteries and questions to discover before that thrilling final page. The children have planned, edited and written a balanced argument: Should Ade ignore the strange shadow or bravely explore it? Excellent handwriting, vocabulary and use of year 5/6 spelling words has been recognised!

In maths we have been looking at area, volume and capacity. We used measuring jugs, cups, jars and boxes to spot each of them. The children were so focused when using link cubes to build cubes and cuboids with different volumes. We even took some time one morning to find out how many different ways we could make £1.25 (so many combinations)!

In Science we explored how the rotation of the Earth on its axis causes shadows to change shape throughout the day. The children wrote up their questions, predictions, variables and are ready to cary out this fair test.

In Guided Reading Year 5 are using their knowledge of Anglo-Saxons to emerge themselves into the story! We even watched a films vipers about a futuristic city which reminded us of the setting of Boy in the Tower.

In History Morpurgo class examined archeological artefacts and drew what an Anglo-Saxon might have worn and carried. We then compared them to modern day outfits.

In Computing the children created their spreadsheets to convert units of measure. They efficiently copy and pasted their code and used their maths learning to deepen their learning.

In DT we taste tasted a variety of breads. It was very yummy and the children used specific vocabulary to describe taste, texture, appearance and identify country of origin.

Week 7 is complete and there’s so much more to look forward to in Year 5!

Have a safe and relaxing weekend.
