Week beginning 12.9.22

Week 2 and everyone’s showing wonderful teamwork!

Thanks to everyone who came to the Meet the Teacher sessions.

In maths we have moved from our topic on place value to interpreting negative numbers. Year 5 confidently counted across zero on various number lines and counting sticks. They enjoyed a competitive dice role game which involved crossing zero. The children discussed the importance of negative numbers in real life!

In English we continued our work on “The Wolves in the Walls”. This time with a twist (The Squids in the Walls)! The children used this as a WAGOL - what a good one looks like - to internalise the structure for when they come to write their own version. The children created beautiful story maps and used these to retell the story without reading any words. We explored the use of co-ordinating conjunctions in the text and worked in pairs to extend sentences with and, but, or and so.

In Guided Reading we continued to explore Michael Morpurgo’s classic book  Kensuke’s Kingdom. We have been using our Reading VIPERS to make predictions, retrieve information and infer what characters are feeling.

In RE we discussed how Christians and Jewish people celebrate in different and similar ways. We created posters on these celebrations including marriage, Easter, Bar Mitzvah and christenings. In PSHE the children discussed their rights and responsibilities.

In Art the children continued to evaluate the work of Frida Kahlo and created impressive (and proportional) self portraits!

In Science we extended our knowledge on forces by conducting an experiment on friction. The children created ramps, used measuring tape and toy cars to compare the friction created by different surfaces. Absolutely amazing teamwork was shown by everyone.

In music the children listened to Living on a Prayer and gave a fantastic vocal performance! They clapped and stomped along to the pulse of the music.

In computing Year 5 got a chance to catch up on Times Tables Rockstars in an attempt to beat year 4 in our weekly tournaments. Happy to say Year 5 is leading the way in points!

Week two is complete and there’s so much more to look forward to in Year 5!

Have a restful bank holiday weekend.

Stay safe,

Mr Donnellan
