Week beginning 10.10.22

Week 6 and Morpurgo class deserve a round-of-a-paws!

We had a very special treat this week when a representative for the Dog’s Trust came to visit our school! We had a very informative assembly and then a fantastic Year 5 workshop. We learnt so much about how to properly look after and stay safe around dogs. Everyone left with lots of knowledge of what to do and what not to do around dogs. Mr Donnellan still prefers cats though!

In maths we have been looking at prime and composite numbers. We learnt a variety of rules about whether a number is prime. We looked to see if the ones column was a 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8, we found the sum of the digits and found out if it was divisible by 3 and we thought about the times tables the number might be in.

Speaking of times tables, there’s been a real buzz in Morpurgo Class around multiplication! Songs, counting sticks and most importantly … Times Table Rockstars! I’m giving the children an opportunity to recall their table facts fluently with a quick go on TTRS every morning. Remember: little and often is best! I recommend 3 minutes a day at home.

We have a wonderful new TTRS display outside our classroom: Who will be in the leaderboards this week? Find out every Friday!

In English Morpurgo Class wrote a small biography for the character in the Mayfly story. This gave them an opportunity to organise their writing with subheadings and time adverbials. The children researched a famous figure to gather notes on. They then wrote detailed biographies, and we placed each one in our class ‘Who’s Who?’ book.

In Science we used playdough, beakers and stopwatches to investigate water resistance. The children made predictions and accurate measurements. They  placed their repeat finding onto a table, and this data was used to create bar charts!

In Guided Reading Year 5 retrieved answers about how Michael recovered from his jellyfish sting and explained Kensuke’s interesting backstory.

In Art the children started incorporated vibrant colours into their self-portraits (just like Frida Kahlo!). They impressed me with their use of shading and tone.

Week six is complete and there’s so much more to look forward to in Year 5!

Stay safe,

Mr Donnellan
