Week beginning 17/01/22

This week we have been learning about Winter. The children have been trying to melt the ice outside, so we decided to find out what would make some ice cubes melt the quickest. We put some ice cubes on the window sill in the sun, we put some ice cubes with water, some ice cubes with salt and some ice cubes we tried to melt in our hands and breathe on. We thought that the ice cubes on the window sill would melt first, but we were excited to find out that the ice cubes that we held in our hands and breathed on melted the quickest. The next ice cubes to melt were those in water, then the ones with salt and the ice cubes on the window sill were the last. So next time you need to de-ice your car, try breathing on it for a quick result!

The children have been working really hard on their phonics skills. They know single letter sounds and are becoming more confident with sh, ch, th, qu, ng and nk. This week we have started learning the vowel digraphs ay, ee and igh. The children have had a go at writing a simple sentence. They will need lots of practise to be able to do this independently, but their first attempts supported by adults were amazing!

Now that the children are able to blend 3 sounds to read a simple word, we have begun to have a go at reading simple phrases and sentences. The children will be bringing 'ditties' home as their reading homework to practise. The early ditties are on sheets of paper and can also be found on the link below.

Resources to support your child's phonics learning can be found at the link below.
