Reading/VIPERS

When we return to school we will be reading different fairytales and our class book will be 'Rapunzel'. As part of this, I would like you to look at the book (pictures below) and discuss the answers (writing them down) with your adult.

Tuesday:

Before reading….

  • What is the name of the author and illustrator?
  • Which characters can you see on the front cover?
  • What do you think the story will be about?

What do you already know about fairy tales? What sort of characters might you find in a fairy tale? Can you think of a problem in a fairy tale you know and talk about how it is solved?

Wednesday:

  • How does the illustrator make Rapunzel stand out on these pages? Think carefully about her use of colour!
  • Rapunzel is trapped in a shed by a witch. True or false?
  • Why do you think the witch visits every day?
  • Can you describe the witch in three words?
  • Art opportunity: Try drawing or painting some trees and leaves in the same style as Bethan Woollvin.

Thursday:

  • How does the witch climb into the tower?
  • Can you punctuate this sentence accurately? “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair! called the witch
  • Is there anything funny or amusing on these pages?

Friday:

  • How does Rapunzel feel about having her hair cut and snipped? How do you know?
  • Why is ‘snip’ written like this? How should it be read?
  • Why does the witch cut Rapunzel’s hair?
  • How do you think Rapunzel spends her days?
  • What would you do if you were trapped in a tower?
