Subject Intent

At Shenley we teach Spanish as our language of choice. We have designed our curriculum to include a range of key areas of study including the opportunities to learn about the culture of Spanish counties and communities. We aim to foster children’s curiosity and help deepen their understanding of the world, not only in KS2 but also with opportunities that develop curiosity for children earlier in their learning journey.  The curriculum allows children to gradually build on skills and as children deepen their understanding, our curriculum supports them to express their ideas and thoughts in Spanish, providing opportunities for them to interact and communicate with others for practical purposes both in speech and in writing. We aim to expose children to authentic Spanish and offer regular opportunities to listen to native speakers. In Lower KS2, children acquire basic skills and understanding in Spanish with a strong emphasis placed on developing their Speaking and Listening ability. These skills will be further developed in Upper KS2 alongside Reading and Writing skills, gradually progressing to more complex language concepts and greater learner autonomy. At Shenley, we aim to inspire our pupils to develop a love of languages, and across other subject areas support them in expanding their horizons to other counties, culture and people. 

National Curriculum Aims for Languages

The National Curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils: 

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources 
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation 
  • Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt 
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
