This is our first book this school year. We started off by exploring what a fairy tale is and identified the characteristics in order to find out if our new story is one. They enjoyed listening to the story and were surptised by it. It encoraged them to think about how we perceive people and how are impressions of others are affected by how they look and what they wear.
The first page shows the work they did about fairytales and what was needed to identify a story as a fairytale. The second pages shows the discussions we had about the first impressions they had about the book from the cover and what their initial impressions of the characters were. All the children has had previous experiences of fairytales but they enjoyed the usual developments in the story, which surprised them and made them think a lot.
After re-reading the story and watching an online version, we discussed the characters in the story. The main chracter is Princess Elizabeth and one of the children described her as 'brave and feisty' , which is a very accurate description of her. after a class discussion and sharing of vocabulary, they all wrote their descriptions and afterward they shared what they had written.
The second main character is Prince Ronald, who one would expect to be heroic and the hero but was far from that. After a class discussion about him, the consensus wa that he was ' shallow, vain and very selfish'. They were annoyed about how he had treated Princess Elizabeth and that was refelected in what they wrote in their descriptions of him.
They listened to the author , Robert Munsch ,reading the story and loved his very animated and expressive reading. They asked to hear it again and enjoyed it even more.
This is story for reading at the end of the day and is linked with our topic: Ancient Egyptians. All the childre are familiar with Flat stanaley and his adventures, so they were very interested in hearing this story. We have just started it and they fearless Stanley has been posted to Egypt.
